Kitchener/Waterloo isn’t just home to cozy cafés and hidden gems; it’s also home to some truly legendary food eating challenges. From giant panzerottis to multi-patty burgers, these local spots dare the hungriest visitors to give it their best shot, and maybe score a free meal (or at least a T-shirt) in the process.
1. McMullen’s Manzerotti Challenge
McMullen’s, Highland Road, Kitchener
McMullen’s serves up a massive Manzerotti, and you’ve got 30 minutes to finish it. Conquer it, and you’ll walk away with bragging rights and a custom T-shirt to prove it.
The challenge has gained traction online, with competitive eaters and creators documenting their attempts. You might have seen a video from well-known food challenger Joel Hansen (Model vs. Food) who has taken on McMullen’s legendary dish.
2. Mel’s Diner Godfather Burger Challenge
Mel’s Diner, University Avenue, Waterloo
A KW classic and student favorite, Mel’s Diner offers the infamous Godfather Burger Challenge — six beef patties stacked high with cheese, toppings, a side of fries, and coleslaw, all served on a bread wheel.
Complete it, and you’ll score a T-shirt and a spot on Mel’s Wall of Fame. Tap out early, and at least you’ll have one of KW’s most iconic diner stories to tell. This challenge has even caught the attention of major YouTubers — both Joel Hansen and BeardMeetsFood have stepped up to the plate.
3. Ernie’s Burger Challenge (Cambridge)
Ernie’s Roadhouse, Cambridge
After our original post went up, we learned there’s a third challenger nearby — Ernie’s Burger Challenge. It features: four of Ernie’s signature patties (with cheese skirts and bacon) and a mountain of fries and onion rings.
You’ve got 60 minutes to finish it all. Succeed, and your meal is free, you’ll earn a spot on the Wall of Fame, and get a free brunch for one. Fail, and it’ll cost you $60. No advance reservations are required.
Would You Try One?
Whether you’re a local foodie, a visiting challenger, or just someone who loves to watch brave souls take on impossible meals, KW’s food challenge scene is surprisingly stacked. Just make sure to bring your appetite!
